Can I plant a whole tomato inherit the earth as a garden plant?
I have a few that I picked tomatoes in the local farmers market and I was getting more interesting in my own tomato plants from these samples. What is the best way to do? Should I take out the seeds and if so, then what and how? Or is it possible to put the whole tomato in the ground and grow it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
You can save tomato seeds, as heirloom tomatoes are open pollinated and (mostly) self-pollinated and therefore grow true to their parents. I've actually been doing something very throughout the fall. A scan of the procedure (more detailed steps in the link): 1. Cut the tomato equatorial (easier access to all cameras inside). 2. Fish out all the seeds and throw them into a jar. 3. Add a little water (about the same volume as all the seeds and pulp and juice). 4. Put a cap on the bottle – the ventilation is good, but make sure the holes are small so they will not fruit flies congregate around it. 5. Keep the bottle in a warm place for about five days. 6. Discard seeds and pulp that are still floating – the seeds are not viable. 7. Pour the seeds that sank in a colander metal, and rubbing the seeds against the mesh of the sieve under running water to get rid of any remaining pulp. 8. Dry the seeds thoroughly, stick in an envelope, label it correctly (this is the part I always forget), and store them until spring! the whole tomato plant would not be advisable, because then we'd have a thousand small tomato lings overcrowding each other, and should be out of the land.

$1.95 HEIRLOOM TOMATO: Heirloom Tomatoes are just what their name implies. They have been handed down, through generations of farmers and gardeners, from family member to family member. Many of these tomato varieties are known to have thrived since the 1800's. Unlike hybrids, they are not selectively bred for taste or appearance. They are open-pollinated, growing 'true to type' plants, like their pre... |
