A belief against certain people, seeds and plants have many ways of being useful to bonsai enthusiasts. The disease more details on some of them.
The seeds are many uses and the first one is to have a tree into a bonsai plant. Pretty obvious, right? But others, growing bonsai future, what could be done with tree seeds?
Another use of seed is the potential for developing a new variety. Each seed is a heritage then different genetic parents. For this reason, some say they can only play a cultivar by cuttings. This is true. But a seed from a cultivar can come even better. I like to think of it as the lottery. Usually about thirty sow seeds of desired species. Average rate of tree seed germination is 75%. So 75% of 30 seeds is around 22. One month after planting, I usually get 22 seedlings. Of these 22, I will click on more weak and promote the strongest. After a few weeks of growth I'm usually able to distinguish between the best producer (which is very interesting), but also I can not find the growing compact with short internodes. Then select the 10 best seedlings and plant bonsai candidate to be moved to its individual pot. Call this increasingly discriminatory method. This leaves me with excellent bonsai stock, which then can be propagated through cuttings.
A third use for seeds / plants is to grow many plants that we will use thin for grafting later. You could graft some roots to accentuate their nebari or graft a branch. We have all seen a bonsai tree and wished that broke a button on a very specific point. So you could do with a graft from side to side.
Also I've seen some people who make over a tree root bonsai trees rock using many seedlings that are wrapped around a rock then join to the seedlings over the rock. The roots and the seedlings eventually merging with rock, but the seedlings eventually fuse in the top of the rock.
Another thing I find useful for seeds is that they can be a source of rare species very cheap and easy. If you do not have access to a particular species of tree in your area, you can always buy seeds of desired species and enlargement. Tree shipment can be difficult and takes much. The seeds are easily ship worldwide.
