What others think of Brautigan's novel "sugar in watermelon?

I read about 1-2 months, I will be honest I do not think I totally understood first time, however I do not think it was that kind of book. Just for interest, what others thought of the work. What was the final message, if there are any messages at all. I found him very aware emotionall book, covering some of the most irrational and visceral of human emotion and reasoning.

He was one of the '70 's' books, Brautigan was one of the writers of the hip that kept us very fun while our minds are doing something else. I think he's destined to be a allogory, something kind of inner journey. though not sure. I liked his stories in "Revenge of the Lawn better. It was a little full of himself sometimes.
