When a large red giant star collapses into a neutron star, how fast the collapse occur?

They say a red giant is 1 AU diameter. I heard that this happens in less than a second for a large red giant. Is that true? I was referring to 1 AU radius, not diameter.

Like the first poster said, no one knows for sure. Moreover, less than a second sounds suspicious. 1 AU is eight minutes of light. Collapse in less than eight minutes means go faster than the speed of light. Not to be expected of a black hole to do that trick. In addition, a red giant is so large because the center is so hot. Even after you run out of fuel, take some time to let the heat (radiate). Uneducated guess might be needed at least a few days.
